SIENA BY NIGHT: PIANIST JIN JU IN CONCERT, January 25, 2013

 Chinese pianist and Italy resident Jin Ju keeps being showered with music awards world wide. In Siena, she will present a program of Czerny, Beethoven and Schubert - a combination that just won her the 2012 German Music Award (ECHO KLASSIK) for the best solo interpretation of piano works by composers of the 19th century. 

Jin Ju is a bit of a celebrity even beyond Italy's classical music world, since the concert she gave in 2009 for Joseph Ratzinger, the German pope who keeps insisting that gays are a danger for world peace. But let's stick to Jin Ju's talent and not bother with pope Benedict's medieval world view. During her concert at the Vatican, Jin Ju played seven historic pianoforte with a program stretching from Scarlatti to Rachmaninoff. 

 I don't know about historical instruments, but I know that Jin Ju rocks on the contemporary Fazioli piano, which she played at Southern Tuscany's spectacular Amiata Piano Festival in 2010. I'm definitely far from being a big shot in ecclesial circles, but that evening it felt as if Jin Ju was playing just for me.

SIENNA MILLER IN PALIO TOWN: TERRA DI SIENA FILM FESTIVAL 2012

Latest news: Sienna Miller will attend the Siena film festival (she would have to with that name, wouldn't she?) for the premiere of Rachid Bouchareb's "Just Like A Woman".  Wednesday 3rd October, 9pm -  Hotel NH EXCELSIOR, piazza La Lizza. Entree is for FREE, but come early to be sure to get a seat.   The Terra di Siena Film Festival is in its 16th edition. Being much smaller than the Venice or Rome film festivals, Terra di Siena nevertheless manages to bring important world premieres and an impressive flock of Hollywood stars to the city of the Palio. Past editions saw stars like Colin Firth (who's married to an Italian) and Susan Sarandon participating. BEST BIKE RENTAL IN SIENA

Villa Catignano: one of the many beautiful places an e-bike can get you to from Siena A few years ago, I interviewed an American writer , who during her month-long stay in Siena whizzed through the city on a bicycle. This was an unusual sight - vespas are the two-wheelers of choice in Siena's hilly town center, not bikes like in mostly flat Florence.  But the invention of e-bikes is about to change this. The city of Siena has installed an  electric bike sharing program which is functioning well. However, it's mostly aimed at locals and residents, as its set-up is a little complicated for visitors who only stay a couple of days in town.
