SIENA FOR FOODIES: Wine and Food Tasting Thursday, 20th of September

Siena isn't just about medieval art and the Palio horse race. The city is a treasure trove for anybody interested in food. Tuscan food and wine that is. The province of Siena produces some of Italy's best wines (think Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano). And the farms surrounding Siena are home to carefully looked after olive groves and vegetable gardens. 


MANGIARE SIENA (Eat Siena - Siena's online food portal) organizes a food and wine tasting to inaugurate the new Siena app. Various bars and restaurants on and around Siena's piazza del Campo have joined the cause and offer a great opportunity to taste yourself through some of Siena's finest food produce from olive oil, cheese and honey to saffron, prosciutto and truffles, all accompanied by a few glasses of Tuscan red from the Castellare di Castellina estate. The restaurants will at the same time exhibit paintings or sculptures by local artists. Click here to read the full program of the event.

SECRET SIGHTS IN SIENA: HIDDEN FRESCOES AT PALAZZO PUBBLICO AND CO.

VINTAGE MARKET AND 1930s PARTY IN SIENA: Saturday April 5, 2014

Considering how much Italy's image is linked to its 20th century icons (from Sophia Loren, Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni to Vespa and Fiat 500), it always surprises me how difficult it is to find a decent vintage store.  Gucci and Fendi outlets may be thriving in Tuscany, but  y ou're better off in London or Zurich, if you're after  a dress Gina Lollobrigida or Eleonora Duse could have worn.  Whether baby clothes or evening gowns, the majority of Italians prefer new to second hand, and whilst antique furniture markets are a monthly staple of many a Tuscan town, garage sales and vintage stores have never really gotten off the ground in this country.    In Siena Aloe & Wolf is an exemption to the rule.
