SHOOTING STARS AND LIVE MUSIC IN SIENA, AUGUST 10 2012




AUGUST 10 is Italy's Notte di San Lorenzo - a night dedicated to watching shooting stars whilst tasting Tuscan wines. This year in Siena it's also a night of music. 

 Medici Fortress - 9.45pm
Pianist Danilo Rea and singer songwriter Gino Paoli (see video above) are two of Italy's greatest names in Jazz. Both of them have been able to have regular stints in Italian pop music without ever leaving quality behind. 

 The open-air concert is part of the yearly celebration of Siena's democratic party located in the fortress. Political debate and many more free concerts will entertain the people who spend August in the city of the Palio: Festa PD at the Medici Fortress

Chigi Saracini Palace - 9.15pm
The final concert of the masters summer course for violinists with Boris Belkin will take place at the Accademia Chigiana's HQ with students from Japan, France, Mexico, Russia and Italy. 

 On Saturday August 11 the final concert of the cello master course will take place at Palazzo Chigi Saracini at 5.30pm. The course was hold by Antonio Meneses. the students will be accompanied by the pianist Dianella Bisello. 

 Also on August 11, at 9.15pm the students of the master course with classical singer Raina Kabaivanska will give a performance at the Chigi Saracini Palace. The students will be accompanied by pianist Ulla Casalini.  
All concerts are for free.

SECRET SIGHTS IN SIENA: HIDDEN FRESCOES AT PALAZZO PUBBLICO AND CO.

But you don't. Because you couldn't. Not even I - the famous writer of an arty-farty blog about Siena - have seen all of the Renaissance frescoes at Siena's civic museum yet.  For a reason. Palazzo Pubblico in piazza del Campo may be one of Siena's main sights (think famous frescoes by Ambrogio Lorenzetti and Simone Martini), but many of its beautifully adorned rooms are normally off-limits to the general public. VINTAGE MARKET AND 1930s PARTY IN SIENA: Saturday April 5, 2014

Considering how much Italy's image is linked to its 20th century icons (from Sophia Loren, Fellini and Marcello Mastroianni to Vespa and Fiat 500), it always surprises me how difficult it is to find a decent vintage store.  Gucci and Fendi outlets may be thriving in Tuscany, but  y ou're better off in London or Zurich, if you're after  a dress Gina Lollobrigida or Eleonora Duse could have worn.  Whether baby clothes or evening gowns, the majority of Italians prefer new to second hand, and whilst antique furniture markets are a monthly staple of many a Tuscan town, garage sales and vintage stores have never really gotten off the ground in this country.    In Siena Aloe & Wolf is an exemption to the rule.
