In Siena
In regard to classical music the season is coming to a close with the last concert of the Micat in Vertice series of Siena's prestigious Accademia Musicale Chigiana.

Saturday 31st of March - Max Gazzè, Casteldelpiano
Casteldelpiano is a bit over an hour's drive to the South of Siena (towards Monte Amiata). But it's well worth the efford - Max Gazzè is one of Italy's big talents when it comes to intelligent pop music and the concert on Casteldelpiano's main square is... for free!

Gazzè also just turned actor in Rocco Pappaleo's beautiful movie Basilicata Coast to Coast. The film tells the story of four hobby musicians, who decide to walk all the way through the Basilicata - Italy's beautiful but little known region of the South. EXHIBITIONS
MILO MANARA - you've still got time till the 9th of April to form your personal opinion of the work of one of Italy's most well known erotic cartoonist.
TIZIAN meets Tuscany. The crypt of Siena's cathedral (discovered only in 1999) makes for a stunning exhibition space for Tizian's 'Battesimo di Gesù' (the Baptism of Christ). Tickets via Siena's OPA museum.

TREKKING 
Love Piazza del Campo but wouldn't mind knowing a bit more about Siena? The urban trekking day on the 21st of April is your thing then. You'll be able to explore Siena's backroads and find out what Siena looked like 4 million years ago (no art, just one big beach). This spring's theme of the trekking urbano is water and the guided walks will unveil the city's liquid secrets. 


Where: from Siena's Piazza del Campo the 2 hour walk will take you through Siena's medieval alleys (total distance 3km).
The guided walks are done in Italian. Check with the tourist office, to find out whether some guides may be able to translate some information into English.

Not in Siena on the day? Pisa, Pistoia and Arezzo are three more Tuscan cities who joined the Urban Trekking movement initated by the city of Siena. And if you're a hiking lover visiting Tuscany in autumn - the next edition is on the 27th of October 2012 (dates on the above website).

Villa Catignano: one of the many beautiful places an e-bike can get you to from Siena A few years ago, I interviewed an American writer , who during her month-long stay in Siena whizzed through the city on a bicycle. This was an unusual sight - vespas are the two-wheelers of choice in Siena's hilly town center, not bikes like in mostly flat Florence.  But the invention of e-bikes is about to change this. The city of Siena has installed an  electric bike sharing program which is functioning well. TASTE SIENA'S CHIANTI CLASSICO AT THE PREVIEW IN... FLORENCE (of all places!)

The province of Siena is a treasure trove for prestigious DOCG wines: from Brunello di Montalcino, Chianti Classico and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano to San Gimignano's white Vernaccia. Best known to the bigger audience and closest to the town center of Siena lay the hills of Chianti Classico. A wine not to be confused with the simpler Chianti (which can be produced in a much wider area of Tuscany). The black rooster (Gallo Nero) logo of the Chianti Classico links back to a much cited medieval legend involving the towns of Siena and Florence and their conquest of the hills dividing the territory between them.  The Chianti Classico vintner's association has overworked the design of the famous logo and will present it to the world on the 19th of February during the 2013 preview of the Chianti Classico collection (from the February 18-20 the Stazione Leopoldina in Florence).  A great logo for a great wine: Chianti Classico Collection in Florence

Ambrogio Lorenzetti's frescoes and paintings

From toddlers to octogenarians, when in Siena I schlepp everybody to see Ambrogio Lorenzetti's 'Buon Governo'. The long title of the painting is 'The Allegory of Good and Bad Government in the City and the Countryside' and it is exactly that - namely an accurate depiction of daily life in medieval Siena. The detailed and elegant fresco cycle is a rarity not just in regard to Lorenzetti's style and technique, but mainly due to its subject matter.
