World famous conductor Daniel Barenboim and the Scala Orchestra live in Siena is such an incredible event - that obviously the concert has been sold out for ages. Luckily there is a way to still get a foot in. Barenboim has been the principal guest conductor at the Scala in Milan since the world famous orchestra voted to give Ricardo Muti the shoe. Talgam gives one of my favorite Ted Talks ever and a must if you are a lover of classical music. Hard to find a more concise and humorous explanation of what that sweating man in front of the orchestra is actually doing (or supposed to do). Itay Talgam's 'Lead Like the Great Conductors' will also tell you why some people are great leaders and others just not (whether they are politicians, football coaches or supermarket owners).
But back to Siena, with the concert sold out, a maxi screen will be put up in piazza Jacopo della Quercia. Not exactly the same like being at the live performance at Siena's Teatro dei Rinnovati, but hey - access to the piazza is for free. And piazza Jacopo della Quercia is the square next to Siena's cathedral - so even if not live the prime ambiance will make up for it.
Barenboim's Concert with the orchestra della Scala is the last concert of the prestigious Accademia Chigiana's '80th Estate Musicale'. So you better join in the fun as long as you can - musically speaking, Tuscan winters can be long and dreary affair once the summer festival frenzy is shutting down.
If a maxi screen is not your thing, you can queue up at the Teatro dei Rinnovati's ticket booth. After 7pm tickets which haven't been collected will be resold. The concert starts at 9.15pm - which will just give you time to have plenty of aperitivi in the stunning piazza del Campo beforehand.
